Basic Characteristics of Alginate Impression Materials in Denture Fabrication

Basic Characteristics of Alginate Impression Materials in Denture Fabrication

Alginate impression material is a natural polymeric colloid extracted from brown algae, widely used for taking initial impressions in prosthodontics.

Alginate impression material is a natural polymeric colloid extracted from brown algae, widely used for taking initial impressions in prosthodontics. It is easy to use, has good flowability, and can accurately reproduce the morphology of both hard and soft oral tissues.

Material Characteristics

Hydrophilicity: Maintains good flowability and detail reproduction even in the moist oral environment.

Elasticity and Strength: After setting, it forms a gel with a certain degree of elasticity and tear resistance, facilitating complete removal from the mouth.

Adjustable Setting Time: By adjusting the powder-to-water ratio or using products with different setting speeds, it can accommodate various working preferences.

Procedure

Mixing Powder and Liquid: Use a dedicated measuring device to measure the powder and water, then mix quickly and thoroughly in a rubber bowl until no lumps remain.

Tray Selection: Select a non-porous or porous tray of appropriate size; the edges should extend beyond the back of the last tooth.

Positioning and Setting: Pour the mixed material into the tray, position it correctly in the mouth, and hold it steady until the material has completely set.

Removal and Inspection: Gently loosen the tray and remove it as a single unit. Inspect the impression to ensure it is clear, complete, and free of bubbles or tears.

Precautions

Do not mix for too long to avoid damaging the gel structure.

Before removing the impression, gently blow away excess saliva from the oral cavity, but do not dry it completely.

Immediately after removal, rinse the impression with clean water and pour a plaster model to prevent deformation due to moisture loss.

Due to its excellent handling properties and cost-effectiveness, alginate impression material has become one of the most commonly used primary impression materials in denture fabrication.
