Although intraoral scanning and digital impressions are becoming increasingly widespread, plaster models still play a supporting role in verification, try-ins, and doctor-patient communication:
Impression Verification: When using traditional silicone rubber impressions, plaster models serve as a means to verify the accuracy and faithful reproduction of details in the impression. In digital workflows, plaster models can also be scanned to generate digital models, serving as one of the data sources
Model Analysis: In complex cases such as implantology and orthodontics, plaster models facilitate intuitive measurement, marking, and simulation of surgical guide placement, compensating for the limitations of on-screen observation.
Fabrication of Temporary Restorations: Using plaster models to fabricate temporary crowns, bridges, or removable dentures remains a simple and effective method.
II. The Effect of Environmental Factors on Curing Properties
The setting reaction of dental plaster is sensitive to environmental conditions; please note the following points:
Ambient Temperature: High temperatures of the mixing water or the room can accelerate the hydration reaction, shortening the working time; low temperatures, on the other hand, delay setting and affect production efficiency.
Air Humidity: High humidity may cause the plaster powder to absorb moisture, leading to pre-hydration, which reduces strength and alters expansion characteristics.
Mixing Method: Manual mixing tends to introduce air bubbles, whereas a vacuum mixer can significantly reduce air bubbles, improving the smoothness and hardness of the model surface.
